About SEB

Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is an app used for conducting secure online examinations. The software turns your computer temporarily into a secure workstation. BE 10 assessment will require students to take their end of course assessments online, using Safe Exam Browser, installed on their own Windows, or Mac OS computer.

Devices

The following devices cannot be used for BE assessments.

  • Smartphones: iPhones (Apple), Android devices (Samsung etc.), and any other mobile OS devices
  • iPads
  • Android tablets
  • Chromebooks

Students will need to use a Windows, or Mac OS laptop, or desktop computer, with Safe Exam Browser successfully installed and configured to take their end of course assessments.

Before Installing Safe Exam Browser

To avoid known problems follow these instructions carefully before installing Safe Exam browser.

  1. Your computer must have a genuine copy of the operating system (Windows or Mac OS). Safe Exam Browser will not work with non-genuine, pirated or cracked versions of operating systems. 
  2. Update your computer completely

  3. Download and install an up-to-date internet browser e.g. Chrome for Windows / Safari for Mac OS

  4. Close or disable the following programs if they are running:
    • Skype
    • OneDrive
    • Teamviewer
    • VNC Software
    • Firefox
  5. If you are using any of the following antivirus software, disable or uninstall it before using Safe Exam Browser:

    • 360 Total Security
    • ESET Nod32 Antivirus Internet
    • Kaspersky Internet Security

  6. Uninstall any older version of Safe Exam Browser already on your computer

The current version is 2.4 for Windows (NOT version 3.0) and 2.1.4 for Mac OS. If you already have an older version of SEB, please uninstall it by following the instructions below and then re-install the current version.


Uninstalling: If you have a Windows laptop

(IMPORTANT: Always FIRST UNINSTALL via Control Panel, then delete folders).

  1. Log in as an administrator
  2. Use the Windows Control Panel to uninstall SEB.
  3. Delete the SEB application folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\ manually
  4. Restart your computer and re-install the Safe Exam Browser 2.3.


Uninstalling: If you have a Mac OS laptop

  1. Log in as an administrator
  2. Click the Launchpad icon on the Dock, and then type Safe Exam Browser in the Search box.

  3. As the target app appears, position the pointer over its icon, then press and hold until the icon starts to jiggle.
  4. Click the Delete button appearing in the app icon.
  5. Click Delete in the pop-up dialog to confirm the uninstallation of Safe Exam Browser.

  6. Restart your computer and re-install the Safe Exam Browser 2.1.4 for Mac OS.
  7. Adjust your computer settings

Windows region Settings

If you have a Windows laptop, and you are in Australia, set your Windows region settings to Australia

  • Click the Start menu, then search for Region settings
  • Under Country or region, select Australia

Sleep Settings

If you have a Windows laptop

  • Click the Start menu, then search for Power & sleep settings
  • On battery power, PC goes to sleep after - select 1 hour
  • When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after – select Never

If you have a Mac OS laptop

  • Click the Apple icon > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Battery
  • Turn off Enable Power Nap while on battery power
  • Under Turn display off after - select 1 hour

Installing Safe Exam Browser

If you have a Windows laptop

  1. Click here to download SEB 2.4 for Windows to your computer
  2. When the file has downloaded, double click on it and follow the steps to complete the installation

If you have a Mac OS laptop

  1. Click here to download SEB 2.1.4 for Mac OS to your computer
  2. Double click on the downloaded file and drag the SEB icon to your Applications folder:

Checking that Safe Exam Browser has installed successfully

  1. To check that SEB has installed correctly on your device, click on the Try SEB link below to test it.
  2. First, you will receive a message asking you to ‘Open Safe Exam Browser?’ like this:


     
  3. When you accept this message, your screen will go black for up to one minute. Don’t worry this is normal
  4. Then if you receive a message that says ‘Congratulations SEB is successfully installed on your device’.
  5. You can now click on ‘Close SEB’.

Success?

If you have successfully installed Safe Exam browser that is all you need to do for now.

You should see the following icon in the Start Menu or Programs List.

However, you do not need to open Safe Exam browser again until it is time to take a test.

If you do open Safe Exam Browser now, you may see this message. (Mac OS Version shown) This is normal. Just close it again!

When it is time to take a practice test or a real test you will receive a file to use to open and start the test.

You will soon receive an invitation to complete an online survey to tell us if you were successful at installing and testing Safe Exam Browser.

If you have followed all the steps above but are still having problems installing Safe Exam Browser please tell us in the survey.

We will then contact you by email to collect more information from you about the problem.

For example, we will ask you to tell us your:

  • First name
  • Family name
  • Student number
  • Operating system and version e.g. Windows 7,8, 8.1, 10 / Mac OS 10.15, 10.14, 10.13, 10.12, 10.11, 10.10, 10.9, 10.8, 10.7, 10.6
  • If an error message was displayed, take a picture with your smartphone to include in your email (or copy the exact wording of the error message)
  • Also write down exactly what you were doing when the problem occurred
  • Try to reproduce the problem, e.g make it happen again, and if you can, write the exact steps you followed to cause the problem. Usually to solve the problem we need to be able to reproduce it.
  • Find out if the problem happens on other computers too. If it only happens only your computer you may need to use another computer for the BE assessments
