Building Leadership for Change through School Immersion

The University of Queensland's Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE) is partnering with the Ministry of Education – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) to deliver the Building Leadership for Change through School Immersion program in 2019.

Now in its third year, the program aims to develop the leadership, intercultural and interpersonal capacity of Saudi education professionals through a university-guided immersion in K-12 schools, with the overarching objective of developing strong English language skills in Saudi teachers.

ICTE currently has 22 English language teachers participating in the specialised one-year program in Brisbane, Australia that includes three key components:

  1. English language training
  2. Technical skills development
  3. School immersion

Phillip Fredericks, ICTE Deputy Director, said the participants would acquire first-hand knowledge of applied teaching techniques and use the skills gained from the immersion experience to develop and implement return-to-work action plans within their schools in Saudi Arabia.

“Through customised English language training, participants will develop their English language proficiency and technical knowledge to improve their ability to communicate and to teach English as a foreign language.

“The program also provides opportunities for the cohort to connect one-on-one with teacher trainer mentors through a guided practicum in Australian schools, and to experience a range of learning environments and teaching contexts to continuously broaden their applied teaching methodology, knowledge and experience.

"I’m confident the participants will return home with enhanced capacity for leadership, and will act as key change agents for the education system in Saudi Arabia and for emerging teachers in their schools," Phillip said.

The Ministry of Education has sent almost 50 teachers to ICTE over the past two years, and has selected the Institute to deliver the program as it has been able to adapt to the changing requirements of the program and needs of the Saudi Arabian education system, and to meet the educational and learning outcomes expected from the immersion program.

The program is an ambitious long-term endeavour and high on the development agenda of the Saudi government, and is guided by Vision 2030 and the National Transformation Plan.
