UQ’s Senior Executive Mission to Vietnam

The University of Queensland (UQ) with the Department of Education, the Australian Embassy, the International Cooperation Department, and the Ministry of Education and Training organised the ASPIRES Workshop on ‘Internationalisation of Higher Education-University Excellence’ in Hanoi earlier this month.

Over 80 university education practitioners and policy makers at the APSIRES workshop, explored how universities can achieve excellence and create meaningful impacts to improve their global rankings and internationalise higher education.

Representatives from UQ, including UQ’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Rongyu Li and UQ’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education’s (ICTE) Director, Mr Julian Wilson, attended Hanoi for the ASPIRES workshop and other seminars under UQ’s Senior Mission to Vietnam.

On this trip, Julian Wilson met with Vin University, established by Vingroup. On August 1, 2019, VinUniversity Project and UQ signed an MOA reaching an agreement on collaboration activities in education, training and research. At this event, were senior representatives from the Embassy of Australia, Australian Consulate General and senior leaders from Vingroup, VinUni, Mr. Rongyu Li and Mr. Julian Wilson.

The joint-effort between both sides in the Vingroup Scholarship Program will open up other collaboration opportunities between the two universities.

From 2019 to 2030, Vingroup will offer 1,100 fully funded scholarships for master’s and doctoral study programs (up to 100 full scholarships per annum). These scholarships will provide Vietnamese students with rewarding opportunities to lead and advance the development of science and technology in Vietnam in the future.

During his time in Hanoi, Julian Wilson also met with Vietnam National Minerals and Mining Corporation (Vinacomin) Vice President Mr Nguyen Hoang Trung. The two sides have discussed future collaboration opportunities in training staff in management and modern mining and professional programs.

On UQ’s Senior Executive Mission to Vietnam, Mr Wilson had a meeting with Austrade Vietnam with Ms Yvonne Chan – Senior Trade Commissioner. The two discussed a brief update and business opportunities for higher education institutions in Vietnam.
