Man-Shan's letter of advice to future students

English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program participant, Man-Shan Fung, shares his advice to future ICTE students. Man-Shan is from The University of Hong Kong and spent 8 weeks studying at ICTE. Along the way, Man-Shan had great adventures, made many friends and enjoyed his time studying abroad.

Man-Shan's Letter of Advice

Going to a foreign country for a six-week immersion seems a little bit daunting at first, but you will never know how much you can gain and learn from it. I am so lucky to have this opportunity and so are you. I hope that you can enjoy it to the fullest. You can definitely reap a lot in this lovely country, Australia.

Australia is generally a safe country. My homestay family are very nice and they are quite experienced in accommodating my needs in various aspects. Just feel free to talk to them if you have any questions or special requirements. Staying with a host family can give you excellent opportunities to practise your English and learn more about foreign culture, so don’t be afraid of talking to them. They are more than happy if you can share your stories with them and talk about your daily life in Australia. When you first arrive in Australia, you have a lot to adapt like the weather, the transport system, the food, the culture, etc. However, it won’t take you long to get used to the lifestyle in Australia. By the time you leave the country, you will definitely miss this place!

There are many places for you to explore like the Gold Coast, Queen Street Mall, Southbank, Queensland Museum, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Fraser Island, Stradbroke Island, etc. This depends on your interests. If you are more into the nature, go to the Stradbroke Island where you can see the beautiful and stunning scenery. If you like beach activities, do head to the Gold Coast and Southbank. The beaches in Australia are quite different from that of Hong Kong. If you have a long weekend, do travel with your friends to other places of Australia like Sydney, Cairns or Melbourne. Besides doing shopping and sightseeing, it is great to spend your time with your friends and classmates, which helps cement bonding and knowing more about each other.

At ICTE, you will study a lot of teaching strategies, like how to use warmers to get students ready for lessons, how to make use of songs, stories, films, drama to increase students’ language proficiency, how to deliver good instructions and how to teach grammar effectively. One of the highlights is the peer teaching opportunity in which you can learn from each other and receive valuable feedback from your trainers. Their feedback is to the point and provide you with valuable insights. There are also many demo activities in the class in which you can get familiar with and practise the procedures of running different activities. Please pay attention to the trainers’ teacher talk, i.e. how they use succinct language to get the instruction and meaning across. Do jot them down in your notebook and use them in your future teaching. They are magic words that help you a lot!

Enjoy your time and it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
