English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes program with National Taiwan Normal University

In 2019, ICTE delivered a customised English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program for 20 Taiwanese high school English teachers in collaboration with National Taiwan Normal University. The program aimed to develop participants’ communicative competence in English and teaching skills for TESOL contexts. As part of this customised EMTP program, the participants completed a series of workshops focused on developing Action Research projects for their classrooms in Taiwan.

ICTE teacher Laura Fairbrother recently went to Taiwan to follow up on the participant's action research modules and how they have put these practices in place in their classrooms. The participants were invited to present their classroom findings from their research at a national conference. The audience were peers from the program and other teachers from all over Taiwan who had come to hear about their experience.

Laura says "having observed all the presentations, it was clear that every participant had benefitted greatly from the experience. Every participant identified a variety of very specific features from the ICTE program that they were able to successfully implement into their teaching and their unique teaching and learning contexts."

"The demonstration of teacher development as a direct result of the action research module was extraordinary; being required to identify their own concrete teaching and learning needs, teachers had to identify and set realistic goals. It was clear from the passion and enthusiasm that the participants greatly appreciated this opportunity to refine their craft and develop their skills as best practice teachers."

EMTP is an in-service professional development program designed specifically for teachers from non-English speaking backgrounds who teach English to students at primary or secondary schools. To achieve this, participants will learn from demonstrations by experienced teacher trainers with participants moving around, talking, listening, thinking and reflecting. Participants will also learn and practice new techniques via peer teaching and feedback and more.
