International Professional Internship for Teachers of English program

The English Opens Doors Program

In 2019, The University of Queensland’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE) delivered an International Professional Internship for Teachers of English program, sponsored by the Chilean Ministry of Education (Mineduc), Programa Inglés Abre Puertas (PIAP), or the English Opens Doors Program.

The four-week professional development program provided Chilean teachers with an opportunity to enhance their English language skills through an immersion experience, gain insights into creative and innovative teaching methodologies, and to design an educational improvement project to be implemented upon their return to Chile.

Participants also acquired first-hand knowledge and insights into teaching English to students through school observations, and undertook cultural activities designed to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Australian culture.

ICTE TESOL Language Teacher, Vicki Bos, said, “The participants were enthusiastic, motivated professionals with a great deal of experience, creativity and insight to offer the program. They embraced the course content, methods and experiences wholeheartedly, and were excellent ambassadors for Chilean English language education.”

The program evaluations show positive outcomes as participants derived a range of insights from their experience of living and studying in an English-speaking immersion environment. ICTE TESOL Language Teacher Simon also found the experience to be very positive stating “The PIAP program was one of the highlights of my teaching year. The participants were motivated, eager to learn, eager to apply what they learnt, and were simply a pleasure to teach."

What Chilean participants said about the program:

"I think this course will have a great impact on me. It has made me more aware of what I can do with my students. I now know how to use skills such as drama and music to help my students engage and feel more motivated," said Juan Carlos Milla.

The participants valued the knowledge and skills of their ICTE teacher trainers and the engaging methods that the trainers employed.

"The teachers were really good guides, they helped us a lot and taught us analytical skills and how to replicate class activities back home," said Bastián Maturana.

ICTE has been working in collaboration with PIAP since 2007 to deliver innovative English and methodology programs tailored to the linguistic and educational needs of Chilean teachers of English.
