Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
Customised online program for groups
CLIL online is a teacher training program delivered synchronously introducing participants to the key concepts to consider when teaching in a CLIL context. It is specifically designed to enhance the application of CLIL methodology to tertiary contexts and support the development of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies.
There is a strong focus on developing appropriate English language skills for teaching content in tertiary institutions that utilise English as a Medium of Instruction and engaging learners through active learning. The program promotes the development of practical teaching skills and strategies for increasing learner engagement, which are easily integrated into higher education contexts.
Participants will engage in up to 20 hours of learning per week facilitated by an ICTE teacher trainer. The program can include the following components:
- interactive lectures
- workshops
- ‘Language for Teaching’ lessons
- virtual peer teaching, reflection and feedback sessions.
In addition to the ICTE trainer-led learning, participants will spend an additional 5-10 hours per week on independent CLIL research and reading, task and project completion and take part in an online community with colleagues reflecting on teaching practices.
A key feature of the course is its practical nature and for participants to apply CLIL principles to their actual teaching materials and resources by:
- Engaging in peer-to-peer teaching activities to apply the language, strategies and principles explored in the workshops (micro-teaching)
- Reflecting on the opportunities and challenges of employing different approaches to teaching.
For participants to:
- identify the theory and practice that underpin key principles of Active Learning in tertiary contexts
- develop an awareness of and ability to use functional English skills for delivering effective lectures
- identify and incorporate English for scaffolding the content of lectures
- experience and analyse a series of activities that increase learner engagement in higher education
- explore the theory and practice underpinning the approach to managing cognitive and linguistic demands in the content classroom
- develop strategies to increase learner engagement during lectures via collaborative tasks and learner-centred activities.
ICTE can deliver customised CLIL training programs for groups of primary, secondary and tertiary educators. Programs are developed to meet the specific needs of the school, university or government partner organisation.
