David has worked as a TESOL teacher for over 30 years. He began teaching in the UK primarily in secondary schools. He then moved into TESOL education while living in Japan. Since then he has worked in Laos and Australia.

David joined UQ-ICTE in 2008 and since then has taught on a variety of courses including General and Academic English, Tourism and Hospitality, Masters of Chinese Translation and Interpretation and Department of Immigration and Border Protection programs.

David primarily focuses on teaching the English for International Business Communication courses at UQ-ICTE in which he has a particular interest. He sees these courses as a vehicle for providing and preparing participants with useful language and skills for engaging in the global workforce.

David enjoys providing students with opportunities to participate in projects outside the classroom to increase engagement with the local community and enhance their experience as students while in Australia. For the previous three years, he has successfully co-facilitated student-run fundraising projects for the Cancer Council of Queensland. He is also involved in running video projects with students for UQ-ICTE Market Development.

David is interested in how intense large-scale projects motivate students to become deeply immersed in successfully achieving goals that have been collectively chosen. He has worked in conjunction with colleagues both in Australia and the UK to investigate how student motivation is increased by being given the responsibility to manage such events.

David has recently been accepted as a participant on the English Australia Action Research Program 2018. This will provide him with the opportunity to pursue his interest in project-based learning and the student experience.
