Study English language with a course at UQ's Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE)

The General English (GE) course is excellent if you want to advance your English language for everyday life, and for further study for your university journey.  

What you will learn:

  • Develop your confidence with the English language
  • Understand and participate in conversations and discussions
  • Speak with fluency, accuracy and clarity
  • Read with greater speed and understanding
  • Express yourself in writing

Course modules

Integrated Skills
• Practise reading, writing, listening and speaking in real-life situations
• Build your vocabulary so that you can express yourself
• Become an effective communicator in English.
Writing
• Learn the language and style of English writing
• Express yourself clearly and precisely.

Sample timetable

Class structure: 

  • 20 contact hours per week
  • Access to additional online and self-directed learning resources
  • You may be placed in a morning or afternoon session based on your course and class level.
  • Up to 18 students per class

(1:00 pm - 5:30 pm)

Entry requirements

GE is suitable for pre-intermediate to intermediate level students. It has two entry points - IELTS 4.0 or 4.5 (or recognised equivalent)

Computer / Laptop

We recommend that you bring your own laptop for classes on campus. For online classes, you must have your own computer and internet access.

Testing

Your teachers will provide informal feedback throughout the course. Formal tests on speaking, writing, reading and listening are held at the end of every 5-week session. Read more about assessment and certification.
