Study English language with a course at UQ's Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE)

Advanced English Communication Skills (AECS) is designed to challenge students with advanced language skills to strengthen their speaking and listening abilities. This course is the most advanced General English course.  

What you will learn:

  • Improve your ability to understand native speakers
  • Increase your vocabulary and knowledge of common English phrases
  • Refine your ability to use English grammar accurately
  • Improve the accuracy and fluency of your pronunciation
  • Feel confident discussing world issues and current events
  • Understand a range of real-world listening and reading materials
  • Collaborate with classmates to complete a project.

Course modules

Integrated Skills
• Develop reading, writing, listening and speaking in real-life situations and grammar skills
• Build your vocabulary so that you can express yourself and become an effective communicator in English.
Advanced reading and writing
• Improved reading speed, fluency and vocabulary
• Plan and write complex tasks
Multimedia skills
• Develop listening, reading and discussion skills through news, world affairs, films and other multimedia forms.
• Work together in a group project to write and produce a presentation

Sample timetable

Class structure: 

  • 20 contact hours per week
  • Access to additional online and self-directed learning resources
  • You may be placed in a morning or afternoon session based on your course and class level.
  • Up to 18 students per class

Entry requirements

You can enter AECS with an IELTS 6.0 (or recognised equivalent).

You can also enter AECS by successfully completing General English Level 6, EIBC II or EAP II.

Your teachers will provide informal feedback throughout the course. Formal tests on speaking, writing, reading and listening are held at the end of every 5-week session. Read more about assessment and certification.


We recommend that you bring your own laptop.
