English for Academic Purposes

English for Academic Purposes will prepare you for success at any university program or academic English test. To get into this course, you need a minimum of IELTS 5 or recognised equivalent.

You can apply to do this course with or without applying for a UQ program. Your class will be a mix of students who have been made an offer to study a program at UQ, and students who are open about what they might do next.

You will need to take an IELTS test or recognised equivalent after the course.  We are an IELTS test centre so you can book to take your IELTS test here.

UQ packages

If you meet the academic requirements for entry to a UQ program, and are close to the level of English required, you can apply for entry and be made a package offer.

A UQ package offer includes:

  • English language classes to get you to the level you need for entry to your UQ program.
  • A place in the UQ program held for you on condition you succeed with your English course and assessment.

There are two English language pathways to UQ that you may be offered.  These are English for Academic Purposes (described earlier) and direct entry through UQ's Bridging English Program.

Bridging English

The Bridging English Program provides direct entry. You need to have IELTS 5 or recognised equivalent to be offered Bridging English. If you pass the Bridging English Program, you can take your place in your UQ program without any further testing.
