Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

About CLIL

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an internationally recognised approach to teaching a language and a subject simultaneously.

We have extensive experience and expertise developing and delivering CLIL training programs and have assisted educators from more than 19 universities and government agency partners in Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Indonesia, Japan, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam develop skills to teach academic content in English.

Why CLIL at ICTE?

For more than a decade, The University of Queensland's Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE) has delivered CLIL training to education professionals across the globe.

Our CLIL programs support participants to:

  • Enhance their ability to teach academic course content in English
  • Develop teaching materials that engage learners and support their learning of content and language
  • Use practical skills and techniques to effectively manage the learning process

The program supports universities to:

  • Attract international students to campus through the increased delivery of courses taught in English
  • Enhance the English language level of local students and prepare them for their own study abroad experience
  • Develop their inter-nationalisation strategy and vision.

Program Content

Participants take part in practical workshops and apply practical teaching ideas and strategies to their own teaching materials. Sample topics include:

  • Motivating learners
  • Adapting texts
  • Selecting and designing interactive tasks
  • Sequencing content in lectures and lessons
  • Supporting students’ language development and output
  • Developing students’ cognitive and critical thinking skills.

Our CLIL training programs include a strong focus on the development of practical skills and include workshops that allow participants to apply strategies presented during the program to their own teaching contexts, using their own teaching materials.

What our participants say

"A tremendously enriching experience. The course helped me to discover the multiple advantages of a teaching model based on constant feedback between the student and the teacher." CLIL participant, CEU San Pablo University
“The course is useful not only to improve ‘teaching in English’ but also to improving ‘teaching in general.” CLIL participant, Tokyo Institute of Technology

Group programs

We can deliver customised CLIL training programs for groups of primary, secondary and tertiary educators at our St Lucia campus and in locations around the world.

Programs are developed to meet the specific needs of the school, university or government partner organisation. Program content, length and contact hours are flexible.

Intensive programs delivered during semester/school term holiday periods are typically two-four weeks in duration. Part-time programs can also be designed to complement academic commitments during semester teaching periods.

Programs can be delivered on the UQ St Lucia campus and have been successfully delivered in offshore locations including Brazil, China, France, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
