The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge in the UK.

CELTA is internationally recognised and one of the most widely taken courses of its kind. Each year, over 10,000 people choose CELTA to open up a world of exciting English language teaching opportunities. CELTA is a NEAS Premium Endorsed Product.


You need to have a high standard of competence in both written and spoken English and a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education, although applicants with no formal qualifications will also be considered.

All candidates are selected on the basis of an interview and application tasks designed to assess language awareness, literacy skills and aptitude.

Course details


Course content and delivery is highly practical and hands-on and will cover how to:

  • select, adapt and develop your own teaching and learning materials
  • plan and deliver interactive and engaging English language lessons
  • manage a classroom
  • assess and evaluate students’ individual English language skills and their learning process.

Your participation with involve a minimum of 120 contact hours including a combination of:

  • workshops and small group-work activities
  • practical teaching demonstrations
  • observation of experienced teachers
  • supervised practice teaching sessions with real English language learners (6 assessed hours).

You will also need to complete a minimum of 80 hours reading, assignment writing and lesson preparation.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and integrated into all course components. It is based primarily on lesson planning and classroom teaching, with trainer evaluations, and a series of four classroom-based, written assignments.

Candidates compile a portfolio of written work including lesson plans, teaching materials and assignments.

Cambridge English Language Assessment awards the CELTA to candidates who satisfactorily fulfil all course assessment criteria and complete all course requirements.

An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, moderates each course, observes teaching practice and reads candidates’ portfolios to ensure worldwide consistency of standards and grading.


You will have access to comprehensive materials held in the ICTE-UQ Learning Centre during the course and 12 months free access to Cambridge English Teacher , an online professional development resource bank and network provided by Cambridge English Assessment.
