Students must demonstrate that their current level of English language proficiency meets the University's English proficiency policy. There are different ways you can meet our English requirements.
General English (GE)
Students are tested on the first day of their course to determine their GE class level

Exit requirement for UQ entry: You must achieve a minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills for UQ programs requiring Academic IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing).
BE entry requirements for UQ programs that require Academic IELTS higher than 6.5 (no score less than 6.0)

Without test score
If you do not have a current IELTS (or other official test score), please apply for the General English course. We will test you on arrival and place you in a suitable course and class level.
Depending on your English language skills and study goals, we will place you in either General English, English for International Business Communication, or English for Academic Purposes.
With test score
If you would like to be placed in a class other than GE before you arrive, or want to apply for a UQ package offer, please provide an official IELTS or other recognised test score with your course application.
