English language pathways to The University of Queensland
We provide a range of ways you can train to meet the English language requirements for entry into The University of Queensland. Which pathway would suit you?
General English
If you do not have an IELTS score or equivalent, or your score is below 5.0, join our General English classes. When you reach General English level 4, you can then transfer to English for Academic Purposes.

English for Academic Purposes
English for Academic Purposes will prepare you for success in any university program or academic English test. To get into this course, you need a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or recognised equivalent.
You can apply to do this course with or without applying for a UQ program. Your class will be a mix of students who have been made an offer to study a program at UQ, and students who are open about what they might do next.
You will need to take an IELTS test or recognised equivalent after the course. We are an IELTS test centre so you can book to take your IELTS test here.

UQ package offers
If you meet the academic requirements for entry to a UQ program and are within the range of English proficiency required for that program, you can apply for entry and be made a package offer.
A UQ package offer includes:
- English language classes to get you to the level you need for entry to your UQ program.
- A place in the UQ program held for you on the condition you succeed with your English course and assessment.

ICTE does not accept applications for package offers.
Bridging English
Bridging English provides direct entry into a UQ program. You need to have IELTS 5.0 or recognised equivalent to be offered Bridging English. If you pass the Bridging English assessment, you can take your place in your UQ program without any further testing.

Academic Communication Skills
If you have a full offer to enter UQ, this 3-week Academic Communication Skills course will prepare you for academic life here. You will develop your academic language skills, learn more about living and studying in Australia, and meet other UQ international students.
